Meet the Corneal Associates

The Corneal Associates at Wills Eye Institute are devoted to excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of cornea and external diseases of the eye. A large part of our practice is devoted to the treatment of keratoconus. We also perform cataract surgery, corneal transplants, and multifocal lens surgery, and treat dry eyes, corneal dystrophy, and other disorders and diseases of the eye.

One of our physicians also perform refractive surgery (custom LASIK, advanced surface ablation, and RK/AK) to help those seeking to improve their vision.

Lastly, through our Corneal Fellowship Program, our physicians teach tomorrow’s corneal specialists to provide care of the highest standard while treating patients and their families with compassion and respect.

Dr. Elisabeth J. Cohen

A 1975 graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Cohen has a particular interest in corneal infections and corneal transplants. She is an expert in the difficult contact lens fittings of patients with corneal diseases, especially keratoconus.

Dr. Christopher J. Rapuano

Dr. Rapuano is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in corneal diseases and has a special interest in refractive surgery. As a corneal specialist, he feels particularly skilled in LASIK surgery, which involves the reshaping of the cornea, and takes pride in decreasing the risk of LASIK complications by effectively determining who is and who is not a good candidate for the procedure.

Dr. Kristin M. Hammersmith

Dr. Hammersmith joined Corneal Associates in 2003 and directs our Corneal Fellowship Program. She is interested in the study of severe ocular surface diseases such as dry eye, blepharitis, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, and recurrent erosion syndrome.

Dr. Peter R. Laibson

Dr. Laibson is internationally recognized as an expert in cornea and external eye diseases, especially corneal dystrophies and degenerations, viral diseases of the eye such as herpes simplex, and herpes zoster and adenovirus, as well as corneal transplantation. Over the course of his long and distinguished career, he has served on the editorial board of virtually every important journal of ophthalmology.
